Federal Labor MP Sharon Chook will stop politics when Australia heads to the polls after conserving the NSW seat of Cunningham for bigger than 17 years.

Ms Chook holds the voters in the NSW Illawarra verbalize, taking in Wollongong, with a margin of larger than 13 per cent.

She has been re-elected 5 times after first taking the seat in 2004.

Other retiring Labor MPs consist of Chris Hayes from the western Sydney seat of Fowler, Julie Owens from Parramatta and Joel Fitzgibbon from the NSW voters of Hunter.
